YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Serena San Cartier, Sammy Mondry, David Koponen and Gino Vitella each claimed titles on the final day of the 2015 Horizon League Indoor Championships held Sunday inside the Watson and Tressel Training Site (WATTS). San Cartier repeated as 60m hurdles champion (8.66), Mondry won the 3000m (10:09.11), Koponen took the 800m crown (1:52.85) and Vitella finished first in the shot put (56ft., 8.50 in).
The women's team finished third (90 points) while the men placed fifth (58). Both teams swept rival UDM to earn crucial points in Metro Series Cup, driven by Trinity Transportation standings.
"Today was a good wrap up to a great weekend for our program," said head coach Paul Rice. "The women had the best championships in our program's existence scoring 90 points which is more than double any point total we have had in the past. On top of that, we scored more points on the track than any other team in the championships. The guys struggled just a bit and I really thought we were going to claw our way back into the top three which we just missed by four points. We are also thrilled we came back with two victories for the Metro Series. The future is very bright for both teams. We need to build up our field events for women to contend for a championship. The men have great young pieces in place and we need to get healthy and stay healthy to be in title contention. We have a lot to be proud of from this weekend, but even more to be excited about what the future holds."
The Golden Grizzlies had other solid performances as Ashley Burr finished second behind Mondry in the 3000m (10:10.10) while Aaron Davis came in third in the 200m (21.91) and fourth in the 60m (7.00), Bryce Stroede also placed third in the 1 mile run (4:14.93) and Candice Mack notched a pair of fourth place finishes in the 200m (25.10) and 400m (57.08).
In the 4x400 relay, the team of Derrek Williams, Chris Scott, Tré Brown and Koponen finished second (3:18.27) while San Cartier, Sydney Sterling, Elizabeth Girardot and Mack came in third (3:56.69).
