Feb. 24, 2015 LITCHFIELD, Ariz. - Elle Nichols is tied for 41st place to lead the Oakland women's golf team after day one of the GCU Invitational, hosted by Grand Canyon, at The Heritage Red Course at Wigwam Golf Resort (par 72, 6,200 yards) on Monday.
"Solid start for the first round," said head coach Alyssa Gaudio. "After the front 9 jitters we pulled together with 11 birdies. We battled through a tough round and are looking forward to the next two rounds to fight our way back up the leaderboard."
The Golden Grizzlies finished tied for 16th place with Creighton and Siena College with a day one score of 322. Nichols carded a 78 (+6), eight strokes behind leader Deanna Salvatori from Grand Canyon. Alyssa Albright was second for Oakland with an opening round 80 (+8).
UC Riverside holds the lead heading into day two after shooting a 7-over-par 295. Northern Arizona is six stroke behind with a 301, followed by Grand Canyon with a 302.
The second round will begin at 10 a.m. ET tomorrow morning with a shotgun start. Live stats are being provided at golfstat.com.
