INDIANAPOLIS - Ciara Schultz was named Horizon League Setter of the Year and also garnered All-Horizon League honors along with Cassie Pelloni, Sammy Condon and Melissa Deatsch, as voted on by the league's nine head coaches and announced by the league office on Monday. The four selections are the most in the Horizon League, topping league champion Cleveland State who finished with three honorees.
Schultz, a senior from Highland, Mich., earns Setter of the Year honors after leading the Horizon League with 11.83 assists per set during league play, as she directed an Oakland offense that hit .245, the second-best mark in HL only competition. She needs just 15 more assists this season to break Oakland's single-season record that she set last season. Schultz also finished league play third in service aces per set at 0.36. Earlier this season, she became the school's all-time leader in assists and sets played and is tied for the career lead in service aces.
Pelloni, a senior from Bellevue, Mich., earns her third-straight All-Horizon League selection after leading the Golden Grizzlies with 3.24 kills per set, including averaging 3.47 kills per set during league play. She ended the regular season ranked seventh in kills per set, ninth in hitting percentage and ninth in points per set. Pelloni currently ranks third in career kills in program history and was only the fifth player in school history to surpass 1,000 kills.
Condon, a sophomore from Naperville, Ill., earns her second consecutive all-league honor after ranking inside the top-10 during Horizon League play in hitting percentage at .294 and blocks per set at 0.96. She finished the season leading the team in blocks per set and was third in kills per set at 2.46. She was named the Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 21.
Deatsch, a junior from Elmhurst, Ill., led the team and ranked fifth in the HL during Horizon League play in kills per set at 3.67 and also led the league in service aces per set at 0.41. She ended the season second on the team in both kills and digs per set. Deatsch totaled 14 matches this season with double-digit kills and digs. Earlier this season, she became just the second player in school history to rank inside the top-10 in both career kills and digs.
Oakland finished the Horizon League season 12-4 and earned the No. 2 seed in the Horizon League Championship this weekend. The Golden Grizzlies will have a bye to the semifinals on Saturday hosted by Cleveland State with Oakland taking on the highest remaining seed from Friday's quarterfinal matches at 5:30 p.m.
