ROCHESTER, Mich. - Oakland will begin men's basketball practice this Sunday at 7 p.m. inside the Athletics Center O'rena. The Golden Grizzlies posted a 3-0 record in their international trip to Spain and have received a lot of preseason hype as one of the favorites to win the Horizon League title.
Junior Kahlil Felder returns for the Golden Grizzlies after posting 18.1 points and 7.6 assists per game. Felder was the only player in the country to surpass 17.0 points and 7.0 assists per game, and was a finalist for the Lou Henson Award, given to the country's top mid-major player. The 5-foot-9 point guard is a frontrunner for Horizon League Player of the Year and is a two-time all-league performer.
Redshirt sophomores Nick Daniels and Jalen Hayes also made starts for the Golden Grizzlies last season and were named to the 2015 Horizon League All-Freshman Team. Hayes, a 6-foot-7 forward from Lansing, Mich., averaged 11.2 points and 6.3 rebounds per game in league play. He was named Horizon League Freshman of the Week a league-best seven times last season. Daniels, a 6-foot-1 shooting guard from Warren, Mich., led the league with a .486 field goal percentage from beyond the arc.
The Golden Grizzlies add a plethora of transfers to this year's team. Redshirt senior Percy Gibson (6-9, 271) sat out last season after transferring from Iowa State. Fellow ISU transfer Sherron Dorsey-Walker (6-4, 200) will be eligible right away due to an NCAA waiver, while Texas transfer Martez Walker (6-4, 185) will be eligible after the fall semester.
Senior 3-point specialist Max Hooper returns to the lineup after shooting 38 percent from long range, finishing 10th in the Horizon League. He made a league-best seven 3-pointers against NCAA tournament participant Georgia State last season and reached double figures in six games.
Freshmen Brad Brechting (6-11, 210), Jaevin Cumberland (6-2, 165) and Xavier Hill-Mais (6-7, 257) all played significant minutes during Oakland's international trip to Spain. Brechting made the game-winning basket against CB TARRAGONA in the final seconds, while all three played double-digit minutes per game.
The Golden Grizzlies will open the regular season on the new Blacktop floor against Eastern Michigan on Wednesday, Nov. 18, at 7 p.m. Oakland will play two exhibition contests against Adrian on Halloween (Oct. 31, 11 a.m.) and Heidelberg (Nov. 11, 7 p.m.).
