Sept. 7, 2014 NORMAL, Ill. - Elle Nichols tallied a score of 151 (76-75) and Danielle Crilley improved 15 shots between rounds one and two to lead Oakland (321-316/+61) to a tie for 12th place on day one of the Redbird Invitational at Weibring Golf Club (Par 72, 6,086 yards) on Sunday.
"I think each and every player that represented Oakland today would tell you that they did not have their 'A' game," said head coach Russ Cunningham. "Maybe it was physical, maybe it was mental, maybe it was a combination of things. The positive thing is we had some solid individual results from Elle, Haylee (Zyber), and Danielle. Elle showed great patience for her first college event. She hit a lot of quality shots and recovered well when she got out of position. Although we cannot win the event, we do have a chance to win the day so that's what our goal is for tomorrow."
Nichols currently stands in a tie for seventh place at 7-over-par, six shots behind Illinois State's Maggie Ambrose (145/+1). Crilley fired a second round 74 (+2) as an individual to finish the day with a 163 (+19). Haylee Zyber improved seven shots in her second 18 holes today with a 76 (+4). She shot 159 (+15) to finish day one in a tie for 47th place.
Northern Illinois holds the lead heading into the final round after shooting 28-over-par 604. Illinois State is in second with a score of 611, while Ball State is in third place with a score of 614.
The third and final round will begin at 9:30 a.m. ET tomorrow morning. Live stats are being provided at birdfire.com.
