YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Sydney Sterling broke her own record in the 400-meter dash with a time of 58.45, .11 seconds faster than yesterday's prelim time, good for a sixth-place finish and Shannon Getchen set a new school record in the hammer throw with a distance of 164 feet, 2 inches, good for fifth place as Oakland finished action at the Horizon League Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Sunday. Chris Scott was the event champion in the 800m with a time of 1:54.12 and Serena San Cartier was the champion of the 100m hurdles clocking in at 14.54.
"Today, we saw some great efforts and to come out of it with two champions was very exciting," said head coach Paul Rice. "I am very happy for Serena (San Cartier) and Chris (Scott) for sweeping their events both indoors and outdoors as that is not easy to do. The photo finish made Serena's race even more exciting. Also, seeing Sydney (Sterling) and Shannon (Getchen) set new school records really added to the excitement. We put quite a few more athletes on the podium today and that's the goal. The team scores are down a bit as we are missing quite a few of our scorers, but the athletes here today put in a great effort - definitely a lot to build on for next year."
Aaron Davis was seventh in the finals for the 100m dash with a time of 11.04 and seventh in the 200m with a finish of 22.07. Oakland notched two more top-eight finishes in the 800m run as David Koponen ran a fourth-place 1:54.51 and Geoffrey Williston earned eight place by finishing in 1:55.40.
For the women, San Cartier finished in 1:01.64 in the 400m hurdles for fourth place at the meet and second all-time for OU while Candice Mack was sixth in the women's 200m dash with finish of 25.31. Courtney Stauffer finished fourth in the 800m in 2:17.54 and Morgan Bridgewater recorded a time of 4:37.06 for a third-place finish in the 1,500m run.
Oakland has one meet left to run as the team travels to Ohio for the Toledo Invite on May 9 and 10.
