OAKLAND COMPLETES DAY ONE OF THE HORIZON LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIPS

March 1, 2014

Day One Results

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Jeff Arirguzo qualified for the finals in both the 60-meter and the 200m dash with times of 6.98 and 21.69 while Serena San Cartier finished first in the prelims for the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.76 as Oakland completed its first day in its first Horizon League Championship meet.

"We had some very nice performances today in some of the prelims," said head coach Paul Rice. "Having qualifiers come in every event we competed in is a great accomplishment. I think overall we expected to have more qualifiers than we had, but we will go into tomorrow and hopefully get some good points from the finals. We did have several PRs come out of the sprints and hurdles which should give those athletes confidence for Sunday. The two big highlights from today were Jeff (Arirguzo) breaking his 200m school record again and C.J. (Gozdoor) breaking the league's heptathlon high jump record.I am very proud of these athletes and looking forward to tomorrow."

Nicholas Girodat finished the 60m dash in 6.99, good for fourth place in the preliminary round and Candice Mack qualified seventh in the women's 200m with a time of 25.29.
