IPFW DEFEATS OAKLAND, 6-1

Feb. 7, 2014

Results

Fort Wayne, Ind. - Elizabeth Guy was a straight-set winner at No. 6 singles to notch her third singles victory in four outings Friday afternoon, but her effort was not enough in a 6-1 setback at IPFW's Pine Ridge Racquet and Fitness Club.

In doubles, Oakland's No. 2 doubles team of Guy and Tamara Blum and the team's No. 3 doubles pair of Rebecca Phyle and Cam Sabourin aimed to keep pace to capture the first point of the match, but both teams were finally edged by 8-4 margins.

"Elizabeth played really well at No. 6 to get us a win," Oakland head coach Heather Redshaw said. "Losing the doubles point really hurt us and we didn't recover for singles. We had some close matches, but we couldn't close them out."

Guy quickly tallied her 6-4, 6-0 win against IPFW's Carlota Trevino to pull Oakland within a 2-1 margin, but a pair of straight-set wins at No. 1 and No. 3 singles gave IPFW the decisive points for the win.

Blum and Sabourin fell in three sets at No. 2 and No. 4 singles, respectively. Blum rallied back to take the second set before falling 2-6, 6-4, 4-10. Sabourin, in her first appearance at No. 4 singles this season, could not hold on in a 4-6, 7-5, 10-2 setback.

Oakland (0-4) travels to instate foe Michigan State Saturday, Feb. 8 for a 4 p.m. tilt.
