ROCHESTER, Mich. - Volleyball's Amanda Baker has been named Oakland's Student-Athlete of the Week, for the week of Nov. 3-9 after being named to the Capital One Academic All-District 5 Second Team and leading the Golden Grizzlies to a pair of key Horizon League victories as Oakland holds a one-game lead in the standings going into the final week of matches.
Baker, a junior middle hitter, earned a spot on the Capital One Academic All-District 5 Second Team on Thursday and owns a 3.96 grade-point average while working towards a bachelor's degree in health sciences. She has aided Oakland in earning AVCA team academic awards and has been a four-time Dean's List honoree.On the court, Baker ranks eighth in the Horizon League and first on the team in blocks this season and is seventh all-time in Oakland history in career blocks (258).
Facing its final road trip of the regular season, Baker led Oakland to two four-set victories at Valparaiso and UIC. Against the Flames she registered 10 blocks (eight assists, two solo), good for ninth in team history, and collected seven kills. On Saturday versus the Crusaders, Baker earned another seven block assists to give her 17 on the weekend.
The first-place Golden Grizzlies will host second-place Milwaukee Friday, Nov. 14 at the Athletics Center O'rena at 7 p.m. and with a win will clinch the regular-season title and host the Horizon League Tournament Nov. 21-23.
