KETTERING, Ohio - Elle Nichols shot a final round 71 (+1) to finish runner-up and Marianna Stepp improved five strokes from her opening round to lead the Oakland women's golf team on the final day of the Dayton Fall Invitational on Tuesday at NCR Country Club - North Course (par 70, 5,872 yards). The Golden Grizzlies finished in second place overall for the second time this Fall.
"Another outstanding individual performance by Elle, while Marianna can use today as positive momentum heading into the Spring," said head coach Russ Cunningham. "Great team effort this week with everyone contributing to our runner-up finish. The finishing holes on the North Course are the most difficult and that was the difference today. We had a couple nice chances to win this Fall so hopefully it will keep us mentally and physically in preparation for the Spring."
Nichols' final round was the best of the tournament as she finished with a 5-over-par 145, one stroke behind medalist Jenna Peters from Butler. Stepp carded a final round 74 (+4) to share seventh place with a 153 (+13), while Alyssa Albright carded a 158 (+18) to finish T24.
Butler captured the team title with an overall score of 604 (+44), six strokes in front of second-place Oakland and 14 shots ahead of Loyola.
This marks the final Fall tournament for the Golden Grizzlies as they will return to the course in 2015 at the GCU Invitational, hosted by Grand Canyon University, in Phoenix, Ariz. Feb. 23-25.
