ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Oakland women's basketball team (8-10, 3-2 HL) concludes a two-game Ohio road swing on Saturday as it travels to Youngstown State (8-9, 4-0 HL) for a Horizon League matchup starting at 4:35 p.m.
SERIES
The Golden Grizzlies are 5-3 against the Penguins, riding a five-game winning streak. The teams last faced on Feb. 6, 2007 in Rochester, Mich. as the Golden Grizzlies won 81-57.
SCOUTING YSU
Youngstown State is 8-9 this season but boasts the only undefeated league record at 4-0. The Penguins are coming off back-to-back home victories over Milwaukee and Green Bay and have not played in over a week.
YSU is led by Heidi Schlegel with 19.4 points and 7.1 rebounds per game and the reigning Horizon League Player of the Week Liz Hornberger with 9.4 points per contest.
A NEW HORIZON
Oakland won five championships (three regular season and two tournament titles) in 14 seasons in The Summit League. Now the Golden Grizzlies embark on their inaugural season inside the Horizon League. The Grizzlies were predicted to finish in eighth place in the 2013-14 Preseason Poll, but currently rank fourth.
NEW COACH FROM FAMILIAR PLACE
Jeff Tungate was named the ninth-ever head coach of the women's basketball program on July 16, 2013. He had spent the last six seasons as the associate head coach for the men's program and helped lead the team to two NCAA Tournament appearances.
Tungate began his career as Assistant Girl's Basketball Coach at Clarkston High School followed by one season as Assistant Women's Basketball Coach at Oakland Community College working for Oakland Hall of Honor member Ann Serra.
MILESTONE MOMENT
The Golden Grizzlies had a milestone moment on Jan. 11, 2014. At Detroit, Oakland earned its first-ever Horizon League victory and the 250th victory in program history since turning Division I in 1998-99.
UP NEXT
The Golden Grizzlies return home next week as they take on Green Bay on Thursday, Jan. 30 inside the Athletics Center O'rena.
