ROCHESTER, Mich. - Spencer Marentette went 3-for-4, with a double and two runs batted in, while Mike Brosseau, Kyle Bobolts and Nolan Jacoby each had two hits to lead Oakland (14-30, 9-10) in a 9-6 loss to Omaha (20-20, 13-4) in the opening game of a Summit League four-game series at the OU Baseball Field on Thursday. The Mavericks outhit the Golden Grizzlies 12-11.
"I am proud of our young men," said OU coach John Musachio. "They battled the whole game."
Right-handed pitcher Connor Mielock (1-1) made his first start on the mound since defeating Centenary in The Summit League tournament on May 28, 2010. Mielock went 3.0 innings, allowing six hits, five runs and walked two. The bullpen of Kevin Korkate, Jonah Lakatos, Collin Gee and Logan Sparkman held Omaha scoreless over the final four innings.
The Golden Grizzlies trailed 8-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning. After infield singles by Brett Impemba and Bobolts, Marentette singled to right-center field to drive in a run and Todd Dunham hit a sac fly to center field to score a run and cut the lead to 8-3.
The Mavericks scored their final run of the game in the sixth inning to lead 9-3. The Grizzlies added a run in the seventh inning on a Brosseau RBI single to make the score 9-4.
OU managed to score two more runs in the ninth inning, highlighted by a RBI double down the right-field line by Marentette. He would eventually score as Brosseau was caught stealing at second base.
The Grizzlies scored six runs, on 11 hits and committed one error, while UNO scored nine runs, on 12 hits and had one error.
The two teams will play a doubleheader on Friday, starting at 2 p.m.
