March 9, 2013

Box Score

ATHENS, Ohio - Jared Theisen sparked a ninth-inning rally in the opener, as Oakland (1-8) split a doubleheader with Ohio (3-9), by scores of 6-4 and 3-12, on Saturday at Bob Wren Stadium. Mike Carson finished the day with three hits and drove in the game-winning run in the opener.

"Our guys showed tremendous heart and grit with the come-from-behind win in game one," said Oakland head coach John Musachio. "I am very proud of the way we fought."

Game 1 Recap
The Golden Grizzlies rallied for four runs in the ninth inning to clinch the first win of the season in come-from-behind fashion. Theisen was 2-for-3 and sparked the rally, while Carson went 2-for-5 and drove in the winning run.

Oakland trailed 4-2 heading into the final inning. Theisen hit a leadoff double to start the rally, scoring on an RBI-single by Connor Mielock. Mielock scored from third on a passed ball to tie the game. Carson singled to bring in Trent Drumheller and gave OU the lead. Nolan Jacoby added an RBI-double to plate Carson with an insurance run.

After taking the lead, the Golden Grizzlies gave the ball to Russell Luxton (1) who kept Ohio off the board in the ninth inning for his first save of the year. Luxton led The Summit League with 10 saves last season and is 1-for-1 in save opportunities this season.

Jason Hager gave Oakland a strong start, striking out four batters and allowing just four runs (three earned) over seven innings. Chris Van Dyke (1-0) pitched a scoreless eighth inning to get the win, the first of his career.

After falling behind 2-0, the Golden Grizzlies tied the game with a pair of runs in the second inning. Theisen had an RBI-groundout and Spencer Marentette scored on an error later in the frame.

Jake Madsen was 4-for-5 at the plate, driving in a run and scoring once to lead Ohio. Taylor Emody also went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Brett Barber (0-2) suffered the loss for the Bobcats after surrendering the lead in the ninth.

Game 2 Recap
Kyle Bobolts was 2-for-4 and scored a run as Oakland had an early lead before a late barrage allowed Ohio to get the win. The Bobcats scored 11 runs over the final two innings.

Bobolts hit a leadoff double in the fourth inning and came around to score on an RBI-groundout by Robby Enslen to tie the game at 1-1. The Golden Grizzlies took the lead in the fifth inning. Mike Brosseau led off the inning with a single and the Golden Grizzlies took advantage of an Ohio error to score two runs in the frame.

Jake Paulson gave Oakland a solid start, llowing just one run over six innings. Lucas Scocchia (0-2) took the loss after surrendering three runs in relief. Sean Kennedy (1-0) picked up the win in relief for Ohio.

The Bobcats scored seven runs in the seventh inning and followed up with four more in the bottom of the eighth. The top three in the Bobcats' order each had two hits. Four Ohio players drove in two runs.

"Jake Paulson gave us a strong starting performance and we were in a great position with a 3-1 lead in the seventh," added Musachio. "We simply need to find the right bullpen combinations to get us to the ninth inning and hand the ball to closer Russ Luxton."

The two teams will conclude the three-game series with the Bobcats on Sunday at 1 p.m.
