April 7, 2012

Box Score

TULSA, Okla. - Aaron Cieslak and Ian Yetsko had two hits each, but Oakland (5-22, 1-1) lost, 13-5, to Oral Roberts (14-15, 1-1) in Summit League play on Saturday at J.L. Johnson Stadium. The Golden Grizzlies jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning before ORU responded with 13 unanswered runs.

"I love the way we came out tonight," said Oakland head coach John Musachio. "I give credit to Oral Roberts for the way they responded. They did a great job offensively."

Oakland jumped out to an early lead, scoring five runs on five hits in the first inning. The Golden Grizzlies sent nine batters to the plate in the opening frame and chased starter Mike Torrence from the game in just 0.2 innings of work. The big hit of the inning was a two-RBI double by Spencer Marentette, while Mike Carson, Nolan Jacoby and John Estes each drove in runs with RBI-singles.

Oral Roberts chipped away at the Oakland lead with two runs in the bottom of the first inning, and then took the lead with four runs in the fifth inning. The fifth inning was interrupted by the second of two, hour-long rain delays. Play was halted with OU leading 5-3 and when it resumed ORU scored a run on a sacrifice fly, before Braden Schlehuber hit a two-run home run to give the Golden Eagles a 6-5 lead.

Cieslak hit his team-leading 10th double of the season as both he and Yetsko went 2-for-4 at the plate. Tim Ryan also had a hit to extend his current eight-game hitting streak and Carson's RBI-single extended a 10-game reached base streak.

The Golden Eagles scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth and added two more in the seventh. ORU outhit Oakland 15-9, behind a 5-for-5 effort from Cam Schiller, who also drove in five runs.

Oakland starter Brady Adamek (0-4) threw five innings and suffered the loss. Reliever Joe Spring (1-1) got the win for Oral Roberts after taking over in the first inning and pitching 6.2 scoreless innings and striking out eight batters. ORU pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts.

Due to the more rain delays, the second game of the scheduled doubleheader was postponed until Sunday.

"I like our chances tomorrow," added Musachio. "We have Jason Hager and Hayden Fox throwing along with a fresh bullpen."

The two teams will play a doubleheader on Sunday starting at 2 p.m. ET The first game will be a nine-inning game followed by a seven-inning game to wrap up the first Summit League series of the season.
