SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Kelsey Carmean was runner-up in the 10,000 for the Oakland University men's and women's track and field teams at The Summit League Outdoor Championships, Thursday evening in Sioux Falls.
On the men's side, South Dakota State leads with 33 points, eight points ahead of Southern Utah. Rounding out the scoring are North Dakota State (3rd - 24 pts.), Oral Roberts (4th - 18 pts.), UMKC (5th - 18 pts.), Western Illinois (6th - 10 pts.), Oakland (7th - nine points) and IPFW (8th - five points).
On the women's side, South Dakota State leads with 40 points, three points ahead of Southern Utah. Rounding out the scoring are North Dakota State (3rd - 21 pts.), UMKC (4th - 18 pts.), Western Illinois (5th - nine points), Oakland (6th - six points) and Oral Roberts (5th - five points).
Carmean ran 37:34.51 to place second in the 10,000. This is the only event at the league meet that the women have scored in every year that they have had a program. Jessica Pizzini cleared 10 feet to place eighth in the pole vault.
For the men, Oakland scored in two events. In the 10,000, Tony Schafer was sixth (33:14.67) and Justin Battle was seventh (33:58.09). John Butler threw the javelin 174 feet, six inches to place eighth, less than a foot away from the school record.
"I'm pleased with how we performed in adverse conditions," said head coach Paul Rice. "It was very windy and cold which played havoc with all the events. Kelsey (Carmean) ran an awesome race. We came up with a game plan for running the race and she followed it. I'm very proud of the fact that she got on medal podium, something she hadn't done before. Justin (Battle) was in 11th place with one lap to go and ended up passing four runners. All-in-all, it was a good day and I look forward to tomorrow."
