Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score
ROCHESTER, Mich. - Sophomore Mike Carson went 3-for-6 and scored twice to lead the Oakland University baseball team (7-18, 1-5) as the team dropped two games 4-1 and 9-1 to North Dakota State (7-18, 4-2) on Friday in a Summit League doubleheader at the OU Baseball Field. The Bison outhit the Golden Grizzlies 28-14 combined over the two games.
"I think our players were distracted by the elements today," said Oakland head coach John Musachio. "Our effort level was not where it needed to be today and was unacceptable. Our team can and will perform better."
Sophomore Kyle Bobolts was one of seven OU players to get a hit in game one, but no Oakland player had multiple hits in the 4-1 loss. Bobolts' single to lead off the ninth inning extended his hitting streak to 12 games this season. The Golden Grizzlies scored their only run in the ninth when senior Dan Gliot grounded out to second to bring home Carson.
NDSU took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Nick Colwell. The Bison threatened a big inning, but the Golden Grizzlies were able to get Colwell out at the plate when he tried to score on a tapper back to the pitcher. Later junior Aaron Cieslak threw out Zach Heidmann at the plate to end the inning.
Colwell was 2-for-4 and drove in two runs, while his brother, Tim Colwell, was 3-for-4 with an RBI to lead NDSU. Nic Obey and Blake Turbak both had two hits each as NDSU outhit Oakland 13-7 in the opener.
Mark Leichtman (0-3) allowed just two earned runs over six innings of work, but suffered the loss for OU. Colby Tognetti (1-3) threw eighth innings for the Bison and earned his first win of the season.
In game two, Carson came in to score on a ground ball out by senior Ryan Waldhardt. Carson went 2-for-3 in game two. After falling behind 3-0 in the first inning Oakland attempted to battle back. However, a key pickoff and two double plays kept limited OU's chances to rally.
Tim Colwell had a bases-loaded single in the first inning to drive in two runs for North Dakota State, which tallied three runs in the first. The game stayed close until NDSU tacked on five runs in the final two innings.
Tyler Steen was 3-for-5 to lead the Bison. Tim Colwell and Nic Obey both finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs each. Six NDSU players had two or more hits in the game and the Bison outhit the Golden Grizzlies 15-7.
Senior Aaron Wick (2-5) struck out three batters in six innings as he suffered the loss for Oakland. Mark Hermes (2-5) struck out five in 5.1 innings to earn the win for NDSU. Reliever Kyle Kingsley had four strikeouts in 3.2 innings of work and earned his first save of the season.
The two teams will finish the series with a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
