LAS VEGAS - The Oakland University women's tennis team's (3-5, 2-1 Summit) suffered its first Summit League loss, falling 7-0 to IPFW (20-3, 4-0 Summit) 4-3 Saturday afternoon at Bally's Resort.
It was a more competitive match than last year as Oakland nearly tripled their amount of games won. The Golden Grizzlies won 25 games compared to nine a year ago.
"I thought we came out and played well," said head coach Heather Redshaw. "IPFW is a very solid program. This was a more competitive match than a year ago. I'm proud of our performances this week. I told the team our goal was to be 2-1 in league at the end of the week. That is exactly where we are, so goal accomplished."
At No. 5 singles, junior Demi Georgakopoulos put up a strong effort before falling 7-5, 6-2 to Yuka Kobayashi. In doubles, junior Karen Karoub and Georgakopoulos lost 8-3 to Alexandra Forsyth and Caterina Kiefer at No. 2. The No. 3 team of freshman Grace Keating and senior Amanda Pettey lost by the same score to Kobayashi and Raquel Vescovi.
Oakland is back on the court, Saturday, March 26 when they take on Wayne State on the road. The match is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
