ROCHESTER, Mich. - Reggie Hamilton scored a career-high 34 points with five steals and five assists to lead the Oakland men's basketball team (3-2) to an 89-83 victory over Utah Valley (3-3) on Friday night inside the Athletics Center O'rena. The Golden Grizzlies went 29-for-38 from the free-throw line.
"I was pleased with getting a win tonight," said OU coach Greg Kampe. "There were a lot of free throws shot and that made it difficult to get a flow going in the game. It kind of went the way I expected after being on the road for 10 days. There was not a lot of pep in our step, especially in that first half, but our kids are competitive."
Three other Oakland players ended in double figures. Laval Lucas-Perry tallied 15 points and a career-high seven rebounds, while Travis Bader and Blake Cushingberry scored 12 and 10 points, respectively. Corey Petros led everyone on the glass with 13 rebounds.
Isiah Williams led all scorers with 35 points for the Wolverines and Geddes Robinson added a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
There were seven lead changes in the first half as Oakland took a 34-32 lead at the break, despite starting 0-for-13 from beyond the arc. OU would make its next 11 field goals, including the last three in the first half to take a 15-point lead, 60-45, with 12:45 remaining.
The Wolverines would get as close as five points on six occasions, but the Golden Grizzlies made six straight free throws down the stretch to extend the lead to nine before a 3-pointer at the buzzer by Williams cut it to six.
Oakland will host Tennessee in a nationally-televised game on ESPNU at 9 p.m. inside the O'rena this Monday night. Former standout Keith Benson will have his No. 34 jersey retired at halftime.
