Oakland Suffers 3-1 Setback to Oral Roberts

Tulsa, Okla. - Alli Kirk had a career-high 29 digs and Meghan Bray added 13 kills and 12 digs but the Oakland volleyball team (8-7, 3-3) suffers a 3-1 loss to Oral Roberts (13-4, 6-1), 20-25, 25-22, 19-25 and 17-25, Saturday night in MaBee Center.

"Oral Roberts was very consistent tonight," said head volleyball coach Rob Beam. "We played well at times, but made critical errors and gave up too many runs of points."

Bray led the way offensively followed by Allison Bell with 12 kills and Brittany Holbrook with 11 kills. Kirk topped her career-high in digs set against Western Illinois earlier this year as Bray and Taylor Humm (14) all had double-digit digs. Alissa Valentine led with 27 assists and Ashley Nevelle had 17 assists.

OU dropped the first set 25-20 as they fell behind quickly 16-8 and were not able to recover. Oakland bounced back in the next set earning the 25-22 win to tie the match. The Golden Grizzlies jumped out to a 7-1 lead and never looked back holding the Golden Eagles to a hitting percentage of .083 to take the set 25-22.

ORU came back to win the third set behind a .342 team hitting percentage to win 25-19. Both teams came out strong in the fourth set as the teams fought to an 8-8 tie early in the set. However, Oakland was unable to overcome a -.028 hitting percentage and Oral Roberts took the set and the match 25-17.

Oakland's next matches will be home against UMKC on Friday Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. on Alumni Night and South Dakota on Saturday at 7 p.m. in the Athletics Center O'rena.
