FARGO, N.D. - Sophomore John Estes went 3-for-8 and freshman Nolan Jacoby drove in three runs as the Oakland University baseball team (8-11 Summit, 17-28) split with North Dakota State (9-10 Summit, 20-24) at Newman Outdoor Field Sunday afternoon. The Golden Grizzlies won the opener 8-7 and lost the nightcap 5-1.
In game one, in the second inning, junior Aaron Wick and Estes singled and moved one base each on a wild pitch. Jacoby grounded out to score Wick and move Estes to third. Freshman Todd Dunham hen singled through the right side scoring Estes.
North Dakota State would score four runs over the next three innings to take a 5-2 lead after five innings. The Golden Grizzlies would chip away scoring two in the sixth and tied it with a run in the eighth. The Bison would score twice in the bottom half to try and take the win.
Oakland would not go quiet into the night, otherwise known as the ninth inning. Sophomore Tim Ryan and junior Ryan Waldhart drew walks to open the inning. Junior Eric Ogg came in to pinch hit and laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance both runners.
Sophomore Aaron Cieslak ripped a single up the middle to score Ryan and Waldhart and tie the game at 7-7. Wick tagged a double to left field to score Cieslak and make it 8-7. OU shut down NDSU in the bottom of the ninth to get the win.
Estes went 3-for-5 and scored two runs, Jacoby drove in three runs and Cieslak and Wick had two hits each. Junior Mark Leichtman (1-4) gave up one hit, walked one and struck out one batter in one and 2/3rd innings for his first win.
In the nightcap, North Dakota State scored in the bottom of the first for the early lead. In the third inning with one out, freshman Todd Dunham singled to right field. He would steal second, move to third on a wild pitch and score on a grounder out by senior Brett Geschke.
The Bison would score four runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it 5-1. Waldhart led off the top of the seventh with a single to right field. NDSU would get the next three batters out to end the game.
Wick (2-4) gave up seven hits, five runs, two of them earned, walked six batters and struck out three in five and 2/3rd innings.
Oakland hits the road, Tuesday, May 11, to take on Central Michigan. The game is scheduled to start at 3:05 p.m.
