ROCHESTER, Mich. - Junior D.J. Jarrad went 5-for-7, sophomore Aaron Cieslak was 4-for-8, scored five runs with three doubles and junior Ryan Waldhart was 3-for-4, scored four runs and drove in four runs as the Oakland University baseball team (16-24) swept Olivet (10-25) 19-10 and 5-4 Tuesday afternoon at the OU Baseball Field.
The wins increased their winning streak to eight games, am NCAA Division I school record. The victory in game one was the 700th career win for the Golden Grizzlies.
In game one, Olivet used five hits and an error to score five runs in the first inning. The Comets would add one in the second for a 6-0 lead. Cieslak doubled to left-center field to open up the bottom of the second. Jarrad singled through the left side to score Cieslak.
Freshman Mike Carson sent a 2-2 pitch over the left field fence to make it 6-3. Sophomore John Estes laced a double to center field and sophomore Connor Mielock was hit by a pitch. Waldhart tied the game as he blasted the ball over the wall in dead center field.
Junior Tommy Jablonski drew a walk and moved to third on a double from Cieslak. Junior Aaron Wick laced a double to right center field to score Jablonski and Cieslak. The Comets would score twice in the third to tie the game at 8-8.
Oakland would score a run in the bottom of the third to take the lead back, 9-8. Olivet used two errors to score a run in the fourth to tie it back up. Oakland broke the game open scoring nine runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Waldhart was 3-for-4, scored four runs and drove in four runs, Cieslak was 3-for- 3, scored three runs and drove in two runs and Jarrad was 3-for-4, scored two runs and drove in four runs. Freshman Hayden Fox (2-0) gave up two hits, three runs, two of them earned, walked four and struck out seven batters in four innings.
For Olivet, Ben Kosmalski, Eric McCloud and Phil Sullens all had two hits each. Brad Beisiegel (3-6) gave up eight hits, 10 runs, nine of them earned and walked two batters in three innings.
In the nightcap, the Comets struck first once again scoring twice in the first inning. In the bottom half, sophomore Tim Ryan drew a walk. Sophomore John Estes doubled to centerfield and was thrown out trying to stretch it to a triple. Ryan did score on the play.
Cieslak reached on an error and moved to third on a double by Carson. Jarred drew a walk to load the bases. Mielock hit a grounder that was misplayed by the infield, allowing Carson and Cieslak to score.
In the fourth inning, Kosmalski reached on an error and scored on a double from McCloud. In the sixth and seventh innings, the Golden Grizzlies had the bases loaded with one out but was unable to get a run across.
In the eighth inning, Olivet scored a run to take a 4-3 lead. In the bottom of the eighth, Estes drew a walk and moved to second on a single up the middle by Cieslak. A sacrifice bunt moved each runner one base.
Jarrad was intentionally walked to set up an out at any base. Junior Dan Gliot then doubled down the left field line to score Cieslak and Estes and end the game.
Estes and Jarrad led the way with two hits each for Oakland. Kyle Teague (5-4) gave up one hit and struck out one batter in 2/3rd of an inning to pick up the win.
Oakland remains home for a single game against Western Michigan on Wednesday, May 5.
