TULSA, Okla. - Junior D.J. Jarrad went 4-for-5 and drove in two runs while sophomore John Estes and junior Ryan Waldhart had three hits each as the Oakland University baseball team (22-33) lost 6-5 in 10 innings to South Dakota State (38-19) in The Summit League Tournament Thursday afternoon at J.L. Johnson Stadium.
The Golden Grizzlies will face Centenary or Oral Roberts at 11:00 a.m. Friday morning.
In the first inning, sophomore Tim Ryan led off with a double down the left field line. Waldhart singled through the left side to move Ryan to third. Ryan would score on a sacrifice fly from junior Tommy Jablonski.
In the second inning, Estes singled through the right side and moved to third on a double off the right field wall. Ryan singled to right field to score Estes and Geschke. South Dakota State would score one in the bottom of the second.
With two outs in the fourth, the Jackrabbits mishandled a grounder hit by sophomore Aaron Cieslak. Junior Aaron Wick then dropped in a single to left field. Jarrad singled through the right side to move Wick to third and score Cieslak.
In the seventh, South Dakota State threatened with two runner on and two outs. The Golden Grizzlies struck out Bo Hanowski to end the threat. Cieslak swatted a double to left field in the seventh. Jarrad then singled to right field to push Cieslak across the plate, making it 5-1.
SDSU would threaten again in the bottom of the seventh with runners at the corners and two outs. Oakland got John Lee to fly out to right field to get out of the inning. The Jackrabbits would score three runs in the eighth to cut the gap to 5-4. In the ninth, SDSU scored a run to tie the game at 5-5.
They then loaded the bases with one out and OU got a strikeout and ground out to end the inning. The Jackrabbits scored one in the tenth to steal the win.
Ryan went 2-for-5, drove in two runs and stole his 24th base of the season, which ties him for second best in single-season history. Sophomore Matt LaMothe (3-5) gave up four hits, two runs, walked four and struck out two batters in 1.3 innings. Sophomore Kyle Teague turned out a solid performance giving up seven hits, one run, walking two and striking out five in seven innings.
For SDSU, Zach Rhodes was 4-for-6 while Billy Stitz was 3-for-5. Trever Vermeulen (9-1) struck out two batters in 1.3 innings.
