ROCHESTER, Mich. - Sophomore Aaron Cieslak went 3-for-3, drove in five runs and had two home runs while freshman Todd Dunham and junior Dan Gliot went 3-for-4 as the Oakland University baseball team (13-14 Summit, 22-32) beat Southern Utah (11-16 Summit, 18-36) 11-4 Saturday afternoon at the OU Baseball Field.
Oakland now plays the waiting game for the outcome of the IPFW-Centenary contest. If IPFW wins, the Mastodons get the final Summit League Tournament spot. If Centenary wins, Oakland will get the spot.
"I couldn't be any prouder of the boys than I am right now," said head coach John Musachio. "They played their hearts out over the last three days. Mark Leichtman set the tone with his strong performance on the mound and our bullpen closed it out. We hit the ball really well and made some great plays on defense. Now we just have to wait and see if we get in."
In the first inning, junior Tommy Jablonski singled to right center field with two outs. Cieslak then walloped the ball over the left field fence to make it 2-0.
Junior D.J. Jarrad opened the second with a double to left field. Dunham beat out a bunt that moved Jarrad to third. Gliot lined a single up the middle that scored Jarrad. Senior Brett Geschke laced a double down the left field line to score Gliot and Dunham. A sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice fly pushed Geschke across the plate to make it 6-0.
In the sixth inning, Bo Cuthbertson hit a solo shot to break up the shutout bid. Oakland would get the run back in the bottom of sixth. Southern Utah used two hits to score three runs in the seventh to make it 7-4. Cieslak would hit a solo shot in the bottom half to make it 8-4.
In the eighth inning, Gliot took the fourth pitch and drove it over the scoreboard in left field. Junior Ryan Waldhart and Jablonski would single and move a base on a wild pitch. Cieslak drove a single to left-center field to score Waldhart and Jablonski and seal the game.
Junior Mark Leichtman (3-5) gave up five hits, one run, walked one and stuck out three batters in six innings.
For Southern Utah, Cuthbertson and Mitchell Kauweloa had two hits each. Cody Eliason (1-7) gave up eight hits, six runs, all of them earned and struck out three batters in three innings.
