ROCHESTER, Mich. - Junior Aaron Wick walked three batters and struck out five in seven innings in throwing the first no-hitter at the NCAA Division I level as the Oakland University baseball team (12-14 Summit, 21-32) beat Southern Utah (11-15 Summit, 18-35) 4-0 Friday afternoon at the OU Baseball Field.
It was the fifth no-hitter in school history, the first since Tracy Piehl blanked Hillsdale on April 15, 1995. The win eliminated Southern Utah from the playoff race and moved the Golden Grizzlies into a tie for fourth with IPFW.
"We came out today and played high energy solid baseball," said head coach John Musachio. "Connor (Mielock) and Aaron (Wick) gave us great starting pitching. Obviously, I can't say enough about Aaron and his no-hitter. He was just sensational."
In the first inning, sophomore Tim Ryan walked, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. Junior Ryan Waldhart grounded out to score Ryan. Sophomore Aaron Cieslak singled and junior D.J. Jarrad drew a walk.
Sophomore Connor Mielock doubled to left center field to score Cieslak and Jarrad. In the second inning, junior Dan Gliot was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a single by Ryan. Waldhart grounded into a double play that scored Gliot to make it 4-0.
In the seventh inning, junior Tommy Jablonski threw out Matt Sanford at first to secure the no-hitter.
Cieslak and Ryan combined to make four great catches in the outfield. Wick (3-5) forced the Thunderbirds into 13 pop outs and only allowed three ground balls.
Oakland closes the series against Southern Utah on Saturday, May 22. The game is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
