ROCHESTER, Mich. - Junior Aaron Wick went 4-for-4 and scored two runs while sophomore John Estes was 3-for-4, scored two runs and drove in four runs as the Oakland University baseball team (11-14 Summit, 20-32) slugged out a 10-7 win over Southern Utah (11-14 Summit, 18-34) Friday afternoon at the OU Baseball Field.
In the second inning, sophomore Aaron Cieslak was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a single by junior Aaron Wick. Following a pass ball, junior D.J. Jarrad hit a fielder's choice that scored Cieslak and forced Wick out.
Sophomore John Estes singled to right field ands senior Brett Geschke was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Ryan drew a walk to push Jarrad across the plate. Southern Utah would get a run back in the third inning.
In the third inning, Oakland used four hits and a walk to score four runs. The Thunderbirds would score one in the fourth inning to make it 6-2. The Golden Grizzlies put up another four spot, this is the seventh to take a 10-2 lead.
The Thunderbirds refused to quit getting five runs on six hits in the ninth to close the gap to 10-7. Oakland then struck out Matt Sanford to get the win.
Junior Ryan Waldhart and freshman Todd Dunham each had two hits while Cieslak and Jarrad scored two runs apiece. Sophomore Connor Mielock (3-6) gave up four hits, two runs, both of them earned, walked two and struck out four batters in seven innings.
For Southern Utah, Bo Cuthbertson was 2-for-5 and drove in two runs while Levi Swenson was 2-for-3. Kyle Melling (5-3) gave up six hits, six runs, all of them earned, walked three and struck out one batter in 2.3 innings.
