MACOMB, Ill. - Sophomore Aaron Cieslak went 3-for-6, scored two runs, drove in four runs with one home run, sophomore Connor Mielock was 2-for-5, hit a home run and drove in three runs and freshman Mike Carson homered for the second straight game as the Oakland University baseball team (7-8 Summit, 14-24) beat Western Illinois (2-14 Summit, 9-32) 11-6 at Al Boyer Stadium Sunday afternoon.
"Today was another outstanding team effort," said head coach John Musachio. "Our hitters kept the pressure on Western's pitching staff all day. We had good at-bats and scored nine of our runs with two outs. Aaron Wick was a warrior out on the mound. He gave a special effort today."
Sophomore John Estes lead off the third with a single up the middle. He would move to second on a wild pitch and scored on a double to right center field by Mielock. Mielock moved to third on a wild pitch and was forced out a fielder's choice by junior Ryan Waldhart.
Junior Tommy Jablonski drove a single through the right side moving Waldhart to second. Both runners came home as Cieslak crushed the ball over the left-center field wall. Western Illinois would come back in the bottom of the third as Jason Summers hit a three-run shot to make it 4-3.
Both teams would score one run each in the fourth making it 5-4, Oakland. In the fifth inning, Carson drew a walk and crossed the plate when Mielock knocked the ball over the left field fence.
Sophomore Tim Ryan drew a walk and then stole second. Waldhart singled to shortstop and Ryan rounded the bag. WIU attempted to throw home but the throw was off line and Ryan scored. The Golden Grizzlies would outscore the Leathernecks 3-1 over the last three innings to seal the win.
Jablonski, Ryan and Waldhart each had two hits while Carson had a solo shot in the sixth inning, his second straight game with a home run. Junior Aaron Wick (2-3) gave up 11 hits, six runs, five of them earned, walked two and struck out five in eight innings.
For Western Illinois, Summers was 3-for-4, scored two runs and drove in four runs while Tom Lilja scored two runs. Beau Below (0-4) gave up four hits, four runs, all of them earned, walked two and struck out two batters in two and 2/3rd innings.
Oakland is home for a doubleheader against Olivet on Tuesday, May 4. The first game is scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m.
