MACOMB, Ill. - Sophomore right-handed pitcher Kyle Teague (4-4) tossed 6.0 strong innings, scattering five hits, allowing one run and struck out seven, and junior shortstop D.J. Jarrad went 2-for-3, driving in two runs, to lead the Oakland University baseball team (11-24, 4-8) to a 4-1 win over Western Illinois (9-29, 2-11) in Summit League action on Friday at Al Boyer Stadium. The game was shortened to six innings due to thunderstorms in the Macomb area.
"I really liked the way our team came out today," said OU coach John Musachio. "We pitched very well, played solid defense and had a couple of clutch hits. Kyle Teague pitched an outstanding game. He seems to get better and better with each start."
Junior second baseman Tommy Jablonski chipped in with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate, scoring a run. Junior Eric Ogg, sophomores Tim Ryan and Aaron Cieslak and freshman Mike Carson each had hits for the Golden Grizzlies.
WIU's Chris Macek (2-5) threw 3.2 innings, allowing four hits, two runs, no earned runs and struck out two. Anthony Kaskadden led the Fighting Leathernecks with a 2-for-2 performance, smashing his third home run of the season.
Western Illinois would grab the first lead of the game on a solo home run by Kaskadden in the bottom of the third inning. The Golden Grizzlies would respond in the top of the fourth inning with two runs, thanks to an error by the WIU pitcher that allowed two runs to cross the plate as OU led 2-1.
Oakland added the final two runs of the game in the fifth inning, highlighted by Jarrad's two-run single to center field as the Grizzlies won the weather-shortened game by three, 4-1.
OU scored four runs, on eight hits and committed one error, while WIU had one run, five hits and four errors.
The two teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader on Saturday, beginning with game one at 1 p.m. ET. Both games can be followed via live stats on OUgrizzlies.com.
