ROCHESTER, Mich. - Junior Tommy Jablonski went 3-for-5 and drove in three runs the Oakland University baseball team (2-6 Summit, 7-22) beat South Dakota State (6-2 Summit, 20-11) 7-5, Sunday afternoon at the OU Baseball Field.
South Dakota State got on the board first using three walks and a sacrifice fly to score a run in the first inning. In the second inning, sophomore Aaron Cieslak doubled to left center field and moved to third on a passed ball. A deep fly pushed Cieslak across the plate.
In the third, sophomore Tim Ryan laid down a bunt single and then stole second. Junior Tommy Jablonski singled to right center field to score Ryan. The Jackrabbits broke up the no-hitter in the fifth, using two hits to score a run.
The Golden Grizzlies would counter in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs, junior Ryan Waldhart walked and stole second. Jablonski laced another single to right center field to push Waldhart across the plate. SDSU scored three runs in the sixth to take a 5-3 lead.
Freshman Mike Carson led off the sixth with a double to left center field followed by a single from sophomore Connor Mielock. Junior Dan Gliot laced a double down the left field line to score Carson and move Mielock to third. Junior Eric Ogg went in to run for Mielock at third and Ryan drew a walk.
Waldhart dropped a single in through the left side to score Ogg. Jablonski then singled to left field to score Gliot and give OU the lead at 6-5. Cieslak grounded out to push Ryan across the plate.
South Dakota State threatened putting runners at the corners with two outs in the ninth. Oakland got a fly out to left field to end the game.
Cieslak went 2-for-5 while Ryan was 2-for-4 and scored two runs. Junior Kasey Kearcher (1-0) gave up two hits, one run and walked one batter in 2 and 1/3rd innings for the win. Junior Mark Leichtman picked up his third save of the season giving up two hits in one and 2/3rd innings.
Oakland remains at home, Tuesday, Apr. 20, taking on Toledo. The game is scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m.
