ROCHESTER, Mich. - Sophomore Kyle Teague went the distance giving up three hits, one run and striking out eight batters as the Oakland University baseball team (1-6 Summit, 6-22) knocked off South Dakota State (6-1 Summit, 20-10) 3-1, Saturday afternoon at the OU Baseball Field. The win snapped an eight-game losing streak for the Golden Grizzlies.
"Our young men showed a lot of heart and character today," said head coach John Musachio. "Bouncing back to beat a good South Dakota State team was a big step for us. Kyle Teague was absolutely brilliant on the mound today."
Oakland came out firing in the first inning. Junior Ryan Waldhart drew a walk and junior Tommy Jablonski reached on an error. Sophomore Aaron Cieslak crushed a triple to left center field to score Waldhart and Jablonski. Freshman Nolan Jacoby doubled to right field to score Cieslak.
South Dakota State would get one back with a solo home run in the fourth. The Jackrabbits would get only one more hit over the last three innings. In the seventh inning, freshman Mike Carson made two great plays at third to close out the game.
Freshman Todd Dunham went 2-for-2 while Cieslak had a triple, scored a run and drove in a run. Teague (3-4) gave up three hits, one run which was earned, walked one and struck out eight batters in throwing the complete game. He handcuffed a Jackrabbit offense that had scored 26 runs and produced 34 hits over the first two games of the series.
Oakland and SDSU close out the series tomorrow with one game scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
