Oakland Falls Twice to Oral Roberts

TULSA, Okla. - Sophomores John Estes went 5-for-9 and Tim Ryan was 4-for-8, scored three runs and drove in two runs as the Oakland University baseball team (0-3 Summit, 5-18) dropped a doubleheader, 12-6 and 5-2 to Oral Roberts (3-0 Summit, 15-13) Saturday at J.L. Johnson Stadium.

In game one, Oral Roberts just chipped away at the win, scoring two to three runs an inning in five of the first six stanzas. The Oakland bats came alive in the seventh inning as they scored four runs off of five hits.

Estes had three hits, junior Tommy Jablonski had three hits and drove in two runs and Ryan had two hits and drove in two runs. Junior Aaron Wick (0-3) gave up eight hits, nine runs, all of them earned, walked four batters and struck out one in four and 1/3rd innings.

For ORU, Juan Martinez had four hits, scored two runs and drove in three runs, Colby Price drove in three runs and P.J. Sequeira scored four runs. Seth Furmanek (3-1) gave up six hits, two runs, one of them earned, walked two batters and struck out four in five and 1/3rd innings.

In game two, the Golden Eagles scored five runs in the first two innings. The Golden grizzlies would then hold ORU to no runs and only two hits the rest of the way.

In the third inning, Ryan singled through the right side and moved to third on a deep single to left center field by Estes. Junior Ryan Waldhart lifted a fly ball to centerfield which allowed Ryan to score. The Golden Grizzlies would use a walk, passed ball and a ground out to score a run in the fifth.

Oakland mounted a comeback attempt in the top of the seventh inning. Ryan and Waldhart delivered singles that put two on with one away. Oral Roberts then got Oakland to ground into a double play to end the game.

Ryan had two hits and scored two runs, Estes had two hits and Waldhart drove in two runs. Sophomore Kyle Teague (2-4) gave up four hits, five runs, three of them earned, walked five batters and struck out four in four and 1/3rd innings.

For the Golden Eagles, Jeff Burleson (4-2) gave up five hits, two runs, both of them earned, walked three batters and struck out seven.

Oakland will close out the series on Sunday, Apr. 11. The game is scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m.
