KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Sophomore Tim Ryan had two doubles among his three hits as the Oakland University baseball team (3-14) lost a tough one, 5-4 to Western Michigan (5-18) Tuesday afternoon.
Oakland drew first blood in their first at-bat. Sophomore Tim Ryan crushed a double off the wall in dead center. After two fly outs, sophomore Aaron Cieslak singled up the middle to score Ryan.
In the bottom of the second, Western Michigan threatened as they loaded the bases with two outs. OU got a pop up to junior Ryan Waldhart at third base to end the inning.
In the bottom of the third, the Broncos once again loaded the bases with two outs. Another pop up, this one to junior Eric Ogg at second, got the Golden Grizzlies out of trouble.
In the fourth inning, freshman Todd Dunham doubled down the right field line and moved to third on a wild pitch. A passed ball by the WMU catcher allowed Dunham to score.
In the fifth inning, Ryan singled and junior Tommy Jablonski drew a walk. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch and Ryan was tagged out at home on a fielder's choice as Jablonski moved to third. A wild pitch allowed Jablonski to cross the plate.
In the bottom of the fifth, Western Michigan used two hits, two walks and a sacrifice fly to score two runs. In the bottom of the sixth, WMU had a single and a double to drive in a run. Following a walk, OU turned a double play to end the inning.
In the seventh inning, the Golden Grizzlies struck back. Ryan laced a double down the left field line and moved to second on a sacrifice fielder's choice by Jablonski. Another fielder's choice, this one by Waldhart, forced Jablonski out and scored Ryan across the plate to make it 4-3. The Broncos would counter scoring twice in the bottom of the seventh to take the lead for the first time.
