CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Sophomore Kelsey Krych went 3-for-4 and stole a school record four bases as the Oakland University softball team (4-9) lost 4-2 to Tennessee Tech (4-3), Friday afternoon at the Frost Classic.
Krych's four stolen bases broke the record of three set by Erica Judge against Southern Utah on April 6, 2001 and Krych against South Carolina State on Feb. 23, 2010.
"The girls came out to play," said head coach Glenn MacDonald. "Kelsey had a great game for us. We played pretty good defense. The long ball was what beat us in this game. Marissa Everitt threw a good game in relief for us."
Tennessee Tech used two home runs to forge a 3-0 lead after four innings. In the fifth inning with one out, senior Anne Cicchini walked and then stole second and third. Following a ground out, junior Dayna Peters drew a walk.
With runners on the corners, senior Katie Dreyer ripped a single to right field to score Cicchini. The Golden Eagles came back with a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth.
In the top of the seventh inning, Oakland mounted a comeback attempt as Krych singled through the left side. Krych stole second and then stole third following a strikeout. Dreyer walked and was replaced on the bases by freshman Katie Showalter.
Freshman Dani Dulberg came in to pinch hit and singled up the middle to score Krych and push Showalter to third. TTU posted two strikeouts to end the game.
Sophomore Brittany Doyle (3-4) gave up five hits, three runs, two earned, walked one batter and struck out one batter in three innings. Junior Marisa Everitt gave up two hits, one run and struck out four in three innings of relief work.
Oakland will play Miami-Ohio at 12:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
