Jan. 28, 2010

Box Score | Notes

INDIANAPOLIS - Not only did a 16-game Summit League winning streak end tonight, but IUPUI stopped Oakland University's nine-game winning streak as the Jaguars (16-7, 9-1) defeated the Golden Grizzlies (15-8, 9-1), 78-54, in men's basketball league action on Thursday night inside The Jungle. Senior Derick Nelson scored 14 of his 15 points in the first half.

"They had 13 layups in the first half," said OU coach Greg Kampe. "We didn't play well, obviously. We never got (Keith) Benson involved, never got the ball inside and we didn't rebound."

IUPUI controlled the boards for the entire night and outrebounded Oakland by 20, 46-26. The Jaguars shot 56 percent (32-57) for the game, while holding the Golden Grizzlies to their worst shooting performance in 12 games, 34 percent (19-56).

The only other player in double figures tonight for the Golden Grizzlies was junior Larry Wright with 12. Junior Will Hudson added nine points, while junior Keith Benson finished with seven points and seven rebounds, missing double figures for the first time in 15 straight games and for the second time all season long.

The Jaguars led the entire game and used 60 percent shooting (16-27) in the first half to take a six-point lead at the break, 36-30. Oakland could never get a run together and the Jaguars outscored the Grizzlies 15-5 midway through the second half to create the separation they needed and hand OU its first loss in conference play.

Robert Glenn led all scorers with 26 points, while Alex Young finished with 20 points for the Jaguars. Jon Avery added 18 points off the bench.

The Golden Grizzlies will travel to Macomb, Ill., for a contest with Western Illinois on Saturday, Jan. 30. Game time is set for 8 p.m. ET and will air on OU's flagship station WDFN-AM (1130) with Mario Impemba (play by play) and Neal Ruhl (color) on the call.
