SHREVEPORT, La. - Senior Adrienne Leone tallied a double-double with 16 kills and 15 digs and hit .375 percent for the second straight match, freshman Meghan Bray recorded 14 kills and sophomore Ashley Nevelle dished out 42 assists to lead the Oakland University volleyball team (10-2, 4-1 Summit League) over Centenary (3-11, 0-4 Summit League) to a 3-1 victory Friday evening at the Gold Dome.
"This was a tough match for us," said head coach Rob Beam. "We never truly settled into a rhythm. I give Centenary a lot of credit because they played exceptionally well and pushed us to the limit. Meghan and Adrienne were the key for us tonight. Their offense was vital and they scored at big moments."
The Golden Grizzlies lost the opening set by a close 26-24 decision before sweeping three straight sets to seal the match victory with scores of 25-21, 25-23 and 25-23, respectively.
Junior Brittany Dunn added 16 digs for OU, while sophomore Allison Bell turned in six assisted blocks, leading the Golden Grizzlies to what would be a nine-block team effort.
Sophomore Jenna Lange also contributed five assisted blocks and nine kills, while freshman Brittany Holbrook tallied six kills and assisted on three blocks.
Leone has now recorded 991 career kills, just nine shy of 1,000 and merely 13 away from the school Division I record set by Tess Pierce, who played for the Golden Grizzlies from 1998-2001.
"I am pleased that we got the win and am looking forward to a great match with Oral Roberts," said Beam.
