ROCHESTER, Mich. - Senior Justin Wilson and sophomore Tommy Jablonski each had two hits in the first game, and senior Taylor Traub and freshman Tim Ryan turned in a two-hit effort in the nightcap, but it was not enough for the Oakland University baseball team (19-31, 8-16 Summit League) as Oral Roberts (26-12, 15-2 Summit League) scored early and often en route to a 10-2, 12-1 doubleheader sweep over the Golden Grizzlies on Sunday at the OU Baseball Field.
The second game marked the final home game of the 2009 season for the Golden Grizzlies.
In the opening contest, ORU jumped out to a 4-0 first-inning lead, but the Golden Grizzlies got back on the board in the bottom of the inning as Wilson led off with a double and was quickly singled home by Jablonski. ORU came back with a two-run shot in the top of the third by P.J. Sequeira, but Oakland once again answered in the bottom of the frame with an RBI single by Jablonski, scoring Wilson who had once again doubled.
However, Oral Roberts came back with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth to push ahead 8-2, and tacked on a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to extend their winning margin to 10-2.
Sophomore Aaron Wick suffered the loss, falling to 3-4 on the season after surrendering six runs in 2.1 innings of work. The Golden Grizzlies did get a solid performance in relief from freshman Dan Augustine, who threw two perfect innings, racking up five strikeouts.
In the nightcap, ORU exploded for seven second-inning runs to take a commanding 7-0 lead. After ORU pushed the lead to 8-0 in the top of the fourth, the Golden Grizzlies broke through in the bottom of the frame after an RBI single by Ryan. ORU then added runs in four of the next five innings to push the winning margin to 12-1.
Freshman Matt LaMothe suffered the loss, falling to 4-3 on the year after allowing seven runs, all earned, in 2.0 innings of work.
The Golden Grizzlies will travel to Central Michigan on Monday for a 3:05 p.m. game with the Chippewas.
