ELMHURST, Ill. - For the fourth straight week, Oakland University had a player selected as Summit League Player of the Week, this time junior Johnathon Jones earns the honor, announced by the league office on Monday. Jones, a native of Okemos, Mich., earns the honor for the second time this season (Nov. 24).
A 5 foot, 11 inch, point guard, Jones led the Golden Grizzlies to a pair of victories last week over Oral Roberts, 81-69, and Centenary College, 78-65. He tallied back-to-back double-doubles, averaging 15.5 points per game, 12.5 assists per game and just 2.5 turnovers per game. He also made 11 of 12 free throws during the week and shot better than 60 percent from the floor (8-13).
On Thursday night, Jones helped guide the Grizzlies to a 12-point win over the Golden Eagles, snapping ORU's eight-game winning streak. He finished the game with his first double-double of the season, scoring 17 points to go with a career-high tying 13 assists. Against Centenary on Saturday, Jones tallied his second consecutive double-digit assist night with 12, posting 13 points on a career-best 11 of 12 shooting from the charity stripe.
Jones is now 10th all-time in league history with 488 assists and is 20 assists shy of moving into third all-time in OU history. Three Golden Grizzly players have earned player of the week accolades; Jones twice (Nov. 24, Feb. 9), Erik Kangas (Jan. 19, 26) and Keith Benson (Feb. 2).
Oakland will have six days off before hosting IPFW on Saturday, Feb. 14, in the O'Rena. Tip is slated for 6 p.m. and will air on OU's flagship station WDTW-AM (1310).
