ROCHESTER, Mich. - Freshman Kristin Turner turned in a career-high 10 points, junior Kirstie Malone added a career-high 11 points, seniors Hanna Reising and Melissa Jeltema set season highs with 15 and 17 points, respectively, and junior Anna Patritto and freshman Bethany Watterworth also scored in double figures as the Oakland University women's basketball team (2-4) raced to a 95-40 victory over Marygrove (3-3) on Monday night at the Athletics Center O'Rena.
"I was very pleased with the intensity of our players in the first half," said head coach Beckie Francis. "I thought we created some havoc for them in terms of them running their offense and we forced them to turn the ball over. I was pleased with the whole team. The bench performance was really good and I was particularly impressed with that we had 36 baskets and 32 of them were assisted. I've never seen anything like it."
The Golden Grizzlies raced out to a 15-0 lead over the first four minutes of the game before the Mustangs got on the board, and raced into halftime holding a 53-9 lead. OU held the Mustangs to just 21.1 percent shooting (4-of-19) in the opening half, as Marygrove committed 18 turnovers in the opening 20 minutes.
OU turned to the bench in the second half, with Turner shouldering the majority of the OU offense in the second half, scoring all of her ten points in just eight second-half minutes.
Oakland held a 66-12 advantage in points in the paint, while outscoring Marygrove 35-5 off turnovers. Oakland held a 26-2 advantage in fast-break points, while taking a 46-22 advantage on the rebounding glass.
Patritto turned in a 10-point effort with a team-high four steals, five assists, and two blocks, while Watterworth approached triple-double territory, with 14 points, seven rebounds, and a team-best (and career-high) seven assists.
OU held a 56.3 percent to 36.0 percent advantage from the floor, while forcing 23 Marygrove turnovers and committing just nine.
Oakland returns to action this Saturday, Dec. 5 as the Golden Grizzlies open Summit League play at IPFW. A 4:30 p.m. tip is scheduled.
