ROCHESTER, Mich. - After their record-breaking performances at the Saginaw Valley State University Holiday Classic, freshman Breanna Peabody and junior Adam Grubius were named the Summit League Track and Field Athletes of the Week, announced by the league office Tuesday.
Peabody, a native of Utica, Mich., made her collegiate debut in style, as she broke three school records at last Friday's meet. She earned a first-place finish in the long jump with a leap of 5.33 meters, notched a 1.48 meter mark in the high jump and finished the 60-meter hurdles in under nine seconds with a time of 8.99.
"Breanna had a very successful high school track career, but you never know for sure how a freshman's first college meet will go," said head coach Paul Rice. "I was very impressed by her performances last Friday. You could tell she was able to stay relaxed and she competed with a lot of confidence. She has worked hard all summer and fall and is doing a great job picking up a lot of new skills in practice to become one of our first ever pentathletes at OU."
Grubius, a junior out of Kalamazoo, Mich., broke his own school record in the weight throw with a distance of 12.80 meters. He also threw a 13.87-meter toss in the shot put, which ranks second all-time in the OU record books.
"Adam, in his third year now, knows what to expect with this sport," said Rice. "He is much more prepared this year. He put in a lot of great quality off-season work and it showed his first time out. I expect consistent improvements from him this season."
The Golden Grizzlies will compete next at the Oakland-Detroit-Macomb Open on Friday, Dec. 12 at Macomb Community College in Warren, Mich. The meet is set for a 4 p.m. start time.
