Box Score Game One Box Score Game Two Rochester, Mich. (May 2, 2007) ???C Cleveland State???s softball team had its bats working in a doubleheader at Oakland this afternoon as the Vikings combined for 23 hits and 15 runs, sweeping the Golden Grizzlies by scores of 8-0 and 7-3. Sophomores
Julie Owen (Goodrich, Mich.) and
Stephanie Schall (St. Clair Shores, Mich.) each had a total of three hits over the two games to lead Oakland???s offense. Cleveland State (26-12) took advantage of a pair of walks to lead off game one. Amanda Houchin followed with a single to bring in the first run of the game, with the Vikings later getting a sac fly to go up 2-0. After that it was a pitching dual over the next four innings between Oakland???s
Niki Schulty (Woodstock, Ill.) and Cleveland State???s Amanda Macenko. Schulty allowed just a pair of hits in that stretch, with Macenko surrendering only four as the score stayed 2-0 through five. Oakland (17-30) threatened in the fifth, loading the bases with one down on singles from
Angela Cicchini (Clinton Twp., Mich.) and Schall and a fielder???s choice. But Macenko came back to strike out the next two OU hitters to end the threat. In its next at-bat Cleveland State then put six runs on the board, beginning the inning with three consecutive singles to load the bases. The next CSU hitter grounded to second, but the throw to the plate was late, allowing the first run to score. The Vikings then got RBI singles from Tara Meyer and Christa Coppus that made it 6-0. A passed ball and another RBI single brought in the final two runs. Macenko finished things off in the sixth, allowing just one hit to pick up the win. She allowed four hits and struck out seven vs. just one walk in the complete game victory. Cleveland State also scored first in the nightcap, getting a pair in the second. The Vikings put two on with two down on a pair of singles, with one run coming home when, on the second hit, an attempt was made to catch the runner off third. But a high throw allowed the run to score. Jessica Burt then tripled off of OU???s left fielder???s glove to bring another run across. Oakland pushed its first run of the game across in the third when Owen doubled and
Sarah Clark (The Dalles, Ore.) traded places with her with a double one batter later. Cleveland State then tacked on a run in sixth on a two-out base hit by Meyer.
Caitlin Lynch (Moraga, Calif.) led off the bottom of the sixth for OU and reached on an error by the Cleveland State first baseman. Clark forced her at second on a fielder???s choice play before
Katie Dryer (Metamora, Mich.) drew a walk. Both runners moved up on a ground out before starting pitcher
Lindsey Frederick (Fraser, Mich.) tied the game up with a single to right. Cleveland State answered that with four more in the top of the seventh when the Vikings got five hits, three of them doubles, to take the lead for good. The big blow of the inning came when Haley Keller hit a two-run double with two away that pushed the CSU lead to 7-3. Macenko finished game two up as well, earning the win after she came on in relief in the sixth. She allowed four hits, but no runs as she picked up her 20th win of the season (20-8). Oakland will move back to Mid-Continent conference play this weekend, traveling to IUPUI for a three-game series. The Golden Grizzlies and Jaguars will play a single game first on Friday, May 4 starting at 4:00 p.m. in Indianapolis.
