Cleveland, Ohio (Mar. 4, 2007) ???C Oakland???s women???s tennis team came up with its first victory of the spring season this past weekend when the Golden Grizzlies split a pair of matches in Ohio. On Saturday OU fell to host Cleveland State in a close, 4-3, decision before coming back on Sunday to down Chicago State by a 5-2 score. Sophomore
Michelle Maxfield (Commerce Twp., Mich.) won two singles matches and one doubles match to lead the Golden Grizzlies with three wins in the two matches. Cleveland State swept the doubles matches to take and early 1-0 lead on Saturday. In singles play Oakland came back from one set down in a pair of matches to pick up wins.
Lisa Lulgjuraj (Warren, Mich.) and
Gabrielle Gogas (Sarnia, Ont.) each came back from a set down, with Lulgjuraj came up with a deciding 10-6 win in her match at No. 2 singles while Gogas won 10-7 in the third at No. 6. Maxfield also won in three sets, rallying after dropping the second set at No. 4 with a 10-5 win. The Vikings took the other three singles matches, however, to take the match. Against Chicago State the Golden Grizzlies earned the doubles point after the No. 2 team of Maxfield and Gogas blanked their opponents 8-0 and the Cougars defaulted at No. 3. Chicago State also defaulted at No. 6 singles, leaving OU just two points shy of the win. Oakland got those points in easy fashion, as Maxfield and
Amanda Scheer (Sarnia, Ont.) breezed past their opponents, 6-0, 6-0.
Jessica Erickson (Port Huron, Mich.) also had an easy win, dropping just one game in her victory at No. 5 singles. Next up for Oakland will be home match against cross-town rival Detroit on Saturday, March 10 at 4:00 p.m. at Lifetime Fitness in Rochester Hills.
