ROCHESTER, Mich. ???C Junior Dan Waterstradt tallied 12 points and 12 rebounds for his first double-double of the season, and junior Derick Nelson scored a game-high 18 points, to lead the Oakland University men???s basketball team (5-6) to a 67-53 win over Rochester College (7-6) on Wednesday night in the Athletics Center O???Rena. The Golden Grizzlies shot 49 percent (28-57) from the floor and outscored the Warriors 40-12 in the paint.
???We knew that Rochester College was going to come in here and play hard,??? said head coach Greg Kampe. ???I didn???t think we played hard and it was good for us to see another team play like that. It was good to get the win and I???m glad it???s over.???
Sophomore point guard Johnathon Jones and redshirt freshman Keith Benson also reached double figures for the Grizzlies. Jones added 10 points and six assists, while Benson also tallied 10 points for Oakland.
The Golden Grizzlies used a 22-3 run over a 10-minute span to open the game up at 30-9 with 6:30 remaining in the first half. The Warriors closed the gap to 13 points at the break courtesy of five 3-pointers as OU led 39-26.
The second half was closely contested as Rochester College outscored Oakland 28-27 in the second 20 minutes. The Golden Grizzlies pushed the lead back to 20 points at the midway point, 52-32, but the Warriors had a 9-2 run and outscored the Grizzlies 21-15 over the final 10 minutes.
Oakland won the battle of the boards, outrebounding Rochester College 38-23. The Warriors??? John Djurovski scored 18 points, while Tyler Leipprandt added 15 points for Rochester College.
The Golden Grizzlies will take on No. 23 Oregon (10-2) on Saturday at the Palace of Auburn Hills. Tip is slated for 9:05 p.m. and will be televised on ESPNU and will also air on WDTW (1310 AM) with Mario Impemba and Tom Negoshian on the call.
