Golden Grizzles Fall to Michigan State

Results Rochester, Mich. (Jan. 19, 2007) ???C Oakland???s women???s swimming and diving team fell to the visiting Michigan State Spartans 170-128 in a dual meet at Lepley Pool this evening. Junior Rachel Beardsley (Fenton, Mich.) and senior Amanda Burwell (Akron, Ohio) each registered three victories to lead the Golden Grizzlies. Oakland opened the meet with a 1-2 sweep in the 200-yard medley relay. Freshman Sarah Ludema (Zeeland, Mich.), Burwell, Beardsley and senior Elaine Shalla (Fenton, Mich.) combined for a time of 1:47.84, the fastest by OU this season. Sophomore Tara Baxter (Manotick, Ontario), senior Kim Bacon (Bolton, Ontario), freshman Kristen Hamilton (Columbus, Ohio) and junior Riley Rigoli (Grand Haven, Mich.) comprised the second place relay, which clocked in at 1:48.45. Sophomore Sophia Gustafsson (Djursholm, Sweden) won the first of two events on the day in the 1000 free, finishing the race in 10:24.64. Freshman Rachel Girard (Minneapolis, Minn.) followed in third place with a 10:28.70 and junior Carolyn Routh (Sandusky, Ohio) was right behind in fourth place with a time of 10:39.08. Burwell led a 1-2 finish in the 100 breaststroke with the fastest time of her career at 1:06.75. Bacon hit the wall at 1:06.98, her fastest time this year. Gustafsson placed second in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:09.58, just 0.15 seconds off the winning pace. Beardsley captured the 50 free in 24.23, her fastest time of the year and just one tenth of a second off her personal best. Rigoli followed in third place with a 24.65 while junior Chrissy Hager (Haslett, Mich.) clocked in at 25.11. After the break Rigoli finished second in the 100 free, posting a 53.45. Gustafsson picked up her second win of the day in the 500 free, finishing the race in 5:06.88. Burwell won the 200 IM by just five one hundredths of a second as her 2:10.20 topped Michigan State???s Emma Schaeffer. The Golden Grizzlies closed the meet with a win in the 400 free relay as Shalla, Rigoli, Beardsley and Ludema combined for a time of 3:32.80, the second fastest time by Oakland this season and more than a second ahead of MSU???s top entry. Diver Missy Butcher (Holland, Mich.) compiled a personal best score of 204.82 on the 1-meter board. She also scored 156.22 on the 3-meter board and placed fifth in each event. The Golden Grizzlies travel to Notre Dame next weekend for the two-day Shamrock Invitational.
