Game 1 Box Score Game 2 Box Score Rochester, Mich. (Apr. 8, 2006) ???C Oakland???s softball team opened its home schedule this afternoon by hosting a doubleheader against Mid-Con foe Western Illinois. The day???s first game featured a pitching dual that wound up 2-1 in favor of the Westerwinds. The Golden Grizzlies came back in the second game, as
Jessica Brubaker (Waterford, Mich.) tossed a complete game shutout while scoring a pair of runs and driving in another in a 5-0 OU victory. Western Illinois (13-19-1, 6-3 Mid-Con) got all of the runs it would need in game one with a pair in the top of the second. The Westerwinds got doubles to start the inning from Nicole Green and Maureen Troller to bring in the first score. WIU got its second when Troller moved to third on a groundout and then scored on a single by Erin Zeller. Oakland (10-15, 3-3 Mid-Con) got one back in the fourth when
Camie Knorr (Appleton, Wis.) tripled to center and then scored on a passed ball. The Golden Grizzlies put runners aboard in each of the sixth and seventh innings, but could not come up with the key hit that would have put more runs up on the board. Western???s Kamren Ferguson improved her record to 6-6 on the year, scattering seven hits and striking out six in a complete game effort.
Laura Chomokos (Gilbert, Ariz.) also had a solid day in the circle for OU, giving up just the pair of runs and five hits while striking out a season-high 10. She fell to 6-7 with the loss. Brubaker had the Westerwind???s perplexed in the second game, as she went all the way to record a four-hit shutout and improve to 2-2 on the season. Western threatened just once against her when it got a pair of hits to start the sixth, but the Westerwind lead runner was cut down at third on an attempted steal and Brubaker retired the next two hitters to put down the rally. Oakland got all of the runs it would need in the second when Chomokos led off with a walk and was sacrifice over to second. Brubaker then helped her own cause with a single that plated Chomokos with the first run. She then later scored on a
Julie Owen (Goodrich, Mich.) RBI single to put OU up 2-0.
Tosha Hodgkinson (North Branch, Mich.) gave OU a four-run cushion in the third when her double to right brought home
Caitlyn Lynch (Pleasanton, Calif.) and Brubaker. The Golden Grizzlies closed out the scoring in the fourth when Knorr walked, stole second, and then came home on a base hit off the bat of
Stephanie Zellner (Gervais, Ore.). Knorr and Owen each had three hits on the day to lead the Oakland???s offense, which banged out 15 hits in the two games. Brubaker and Chomokos combined to allow 11 hits while striking out 12 hitters against just a pair of walks. Green and Lindsey Hession each had a pair of hits for Western Illinois. Oakland and Western will finish the series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 11:00 a.m. at the OU Softball Field.
