Box Score Rochester, Mich. (Jan. 30, 2006) ???C Oakland University???s women???s basketball team extended its win streak to three games and its home win streak to four as the Golden Grizzlies took down conference-leading Western Illinois 66-57 in the O???Rena. Junior
Bonnie Baker (Allen Park, Mich.) registered a career night in the win with a game-leading 21 points on 70 percent shooting and a 7-for-8 output from the free throw line. ???I know Bonnie did well offensively, but I give her tremendous credit defensively tonight,??? head coach
Beckie Francis said. ???She was fearless and I???m very proud of her. We played great team defense tonight as well. I don???t like to hype up single games, but we???ll certainly take the win.??? The Golden Grizzlies were the first to get on the board in the contest as Baker drew an early Western Illinois foul and connected on both of her free throws. The Westerwinds, however, took the lead less than a minute later and would hang on to it until Baker drove past Zane Teilane for the lay-in to make it 12-all. The junior then forced a WIU turnover to get the ball right back for Oakland. By the 7:32 mark, Western had taken a 22-16 lead on a jumper by Samantha Greer, but OU cut it back down to two points on a bucket by
Nicole Piggott (Pewamo, Mich.) at 3:21. The Black and Gold regained the lead 41 seconds later on a 22-footer from
April Kidd (Grand Rapids, Mich.) to make the score 25-24. Though the visitors took back the advantage with just over a minute to go in the half, another three-pointer by Kidd gave the Grizzlies a 31-30 edge heading into the locker room. A free throw by Teilane with 18:35 showing on the clock in the second half tied the game at 31-all, but Oakland responded with a lay-up by Baker on the other end, which gave the Golden Grizzlies a lead they would not relinquish. A triple by
Anne Hafeli (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) made it 45-34 with 13:08 to go, but the Westerwinds cut OU???s lead down to seven after a basket and a pair of free throws from Teilane. Oakland stormed back out, taking a 15-point lead on four occasions with the last time coming on two freebies from Baker at the line that made her the fourth OU player to score 20 or more points this season. WIU wasn???t finished with the Grizzlies though as the Westerwinds put together a 10-0 run over a two and a half minute span, capped off by a Laura Reeves trey to make the score 59-54 at 3:06. After a
Jayme Wilson (Shawnee, Kan.) jumper, Reeves squeezed the lead down to four with another three-pointer, but that???s as close as Western would get. OU finished off the game with a 5-0 run and fittingly ended it the same way it started ???C with a Baker free throw. OU (9-11, 5-4 Mid-Con) out-rebounded its opponent for the third straight game and made an impressive 20 of its 22 free throw attempts. The contest was also the fifth this season in which at least four players scored in double figures for the Golden Grizzlies. Kidd tied a career-high with 14, while Wilson had 11 and Piggott chipped in with 10. Western Illinois (15-4, 7-2 Mid-Con) was led by Teilane???s 14 points and 10 boards, adding a game-high five assists and as many blocks. Reeves finished with 12 points, while Dee Dee Murphy had 10 to help the Westerwinds, who dropped their second straight game. Oakland hits the road to end the week as the Golden Grizzlies face off against IUPUI in Indianapolis Saturday, Feb. 4. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Eastern with Oakland???s men???s team to follow at 7 p.m. versus the Jaguars. OU finishes out the regular season with five of their last seven games coming on the road.
