(Sept. 22, 2005) ???C Oakland???s women???s tennis team made it three wins in three tries at the start of the season with a 4-2 win over Lake Superior State at Lifetime Fitness this afternoon. Freshman Michelle Maxfield (Commerce Township, Mich.) secured the Golden Grizzly win with a come from behind victory at the No. 2 singles position. The win lifted Oakland to a 3-0 start, its best beginning since the program moved to Division I status seven years ago. After the match was washed out of its outdoor location at Stoney Creek High School, the teams started action indoors with singles play. Oakland wasted no time taking the lead when Angie Trecola (Troy, Mich.) picked up a 6-3, 6-4 win over Megan LaMonthe at No. 3 singles. The Golden Grizzlies built on the lead with another pair of wins, getting straight set victories at Nos. 4 and 5 singles from Amanda Scheer (Sarnia, Ont.) and Jessica Erickson (Port Huron, Mich.). Lake Superior State picked up a win at No. 6 singles in a three-set match to get on the board, but Maxfield decided things with her impressive win. After dropping the first set 6-3, she came back to take the second by the same score before holding off her opponent, 7-5, in the deciding set. With the matched locked up in the Oakland win column and playing space limited, the doubles matches were not contested.
