Oakland Races Past Centenary In Regular Season Finale, 86-60

Box Score Shreveport, La. (Feb. 28, 2005) ???C Oakland???s men???s basketball team closed out the regular season on a high note, jumping out to an early 10-point lead and never looking back, as the Golden Grizzlies raced past Centenary, 86-60. Oakland shot 56 percent for the game and was led by Rawle Marshall???s (Detroit, Mich.) 24 points, six rebounds and three steals as the Golden Grizzlies won their second straight to close the regular season. It did not take long for Oakland, which shot 65.5 percent in the first 20 minutes, to get things going against the Gents. After the two teams traded opening baskets, the Golden Grizzlies reeled off nine straight points to take an 11-2 lead on Marshall???s three-point shot with 15:00 showing on the clock. Oakland built its lead up to 21-7 on a trey from DeMarcus Ishmeal (Detroit, Mich.) before Centenary answered on its next possession, getting a lay-up from Troy Williams that cut the Oakland lead to 21-9 with 11:52 left in the half. Cortney Scott (Lansing, Mich.), David Carson (Merilleville, Ind.), Ishmeal and Marshall all racked up steals in the next several minutes that helped stall the Centenary offense, holding the Gents scoreless for six minutes. The Golden Grizzlies capitalized and out scored their hosts 12-0, six points of which came from Scott, to pull out to a 33-9 lead. From there Oakland had no trouble for the rest of the half and carried a 48-20 advantage into the locker room at the half. Centenary could only manage a point in the first two minutes of the second half, while the Golden Grizzlies opened up the half with Pierre Dukes (Grand Blanc, Mich.) getting a steal and converting on the other end with a three-point shot to push the Oakland lead past the 30-point mark. While Oakland???s shooting cooled off a bit in the second half, the hole was too big for Centenary to overcome and the Golden Grizzlies led by at least 30 points until the final minute and a half. Over the first 10 minutes of the half Oakland out scored the Gents 25-11, opening their biggest lead of the night when a Brandon Cassise (Walled Lake, Mich.) jumper made it 73-31 with 10:28 to play. From there Oakland was able to cruise home with the easy win. Marshall led all scorers with his 24 points, with Scott totaling 18 and Ishmeal pumping in a season-high 14 points, including hitting all three of his three-point attempts. Chad Maclies led Centenary with 16 points and nine rebounds. Up next for Oakland will be the Mid-Con Tournament in Tulsa, Oklahoma that will open next Saturday, March 5. Parings for the tournament will be announced tomorrow.
