Box Score Chicago, Ill. (Feb. 19, 2005) ???C It looked for awhile that Oakland would come up with its third road win in the last four tries, but the Golden Grizzlies went cold in the second half and Chicago State was able to come back and defeat OU, 73-62.
Rawle Marshall (Detroit, Mich.) led Oakland with 23 points and seven rebounds. Neither team was able to get an early advantage, with the two squads trading baskets for most of the first 10 minutes of the contest. Chicago State had a 12-9 lead on a basket by Deji Akindele, but a three-point shot by
David Carson (Merrillville, Ind.) and four straight points from Marshall resulted in a 16-14 Oakland lead at the 12:04 mark. Oakland stretched its advantage out to 21-16 on a trey from
Brandon Cassise (Walled Lake, Mich.) but the Cougars came back with four straight to cut the OU lead back down to two with eight minutes left in the half. A strong shooting effort, 61 percent in the half, kept the Golden Grizzlies in the lead the rest of the way to the half. Fouled shooting a three, Cassise sank all three of his free throws that extended the OU lead to 26-20 with 6:52 left. From there Oakland was able to maintain its advantage and the team???s fourth trey of the half, this one by
DeMarcus Ishmeal (Detroit, Mich.) with seven seconds left in the half, gave the Golden Grizzlies a 36-28 edge going into the locker room. A
Pierre Dukes (Grand Blanc, Mich.) three-pointer in the opening minutes of the second half held off an early Chicago State surge, keeping the OU lead at eight. Four minutes later Marshall broke free on the baseline for a dunk and a subsequent free throw that put the Golden Grizzlies up by 12 at 47-35. After that, however, the wheels came off for the Golden Grizzlies. A Tony Weeden shot started the Chicago State come back that saw the Cougars out score OU 21-4 over a six minute period. With the Golden Grizzlies going stone cold, Weeden led the charge for the Cougars, getting seven of the points during the surge despite playing with four fouls. A basket by Akindele with 5:15 left finished off the run, giving CSU a 56-50 lead. Oakland could not recover after that as the Golden Grizzlies continued to struggle on the offensive end while Chicago State hit 10 straight free throws down the stretch to finish off the win.
