Nicole Piggott (Pewamo, Mich.), Western Ontario jumped out to a 10-point lead at 11:55 on a jumper by Nadine Paron. The Mustangs led by 10 once again with 5:24 showing on the clock when Megan Lapointe made one count in the paint. Oakland clawed its way back, however, tying the score at 28-all with just over a minute and a half left in the period on a pair of freebies from Wilson. Anne Hafeli (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) drained a three at 14:44. The Mustangs were never too far behind and regained the lead at 7:02 on another lay-in by Romkey. Their advantage was short-lived, however as Hafeli hit another trey to put the Golden Grizzlies up 56-54. The lead changed hands one more time before Oakland went up for good with 4:56 remaining in the game after a shot by Wilson from beyond the arc. Just over a minute later, the home team took its largest lead of the game when Wilson sank her second three-pointer of the contest. Western cut the lead to three on its next trip down the court, but that???s as close as the visitors would get as the Black and Gold hung on for a five-point win on consecutive free throws from Piggott with three seconds to go. The Golden Grizzlies shot nearly 39 percent in the effort, while the Mustangs were 27-for-52 from the field (.519). Oakland was brilliant from the charity stripe, hitting 18-of-20. OU opens its regular-season this weekend on the road. The Grizzlies start with Wisconsin-Milwaukee on Friday, Nov. 18, at 8 p.m. (7:00 Central). The team stays in town to face Marquette Sunday, Nov. 20, at 3 p.m. (2:00).
