Oakland Tennis Rolls Past Niagara

Rochester Hills, Mich. (Oct. 8, 2005) ???C Oakland???s women???s tennis team concluded its highly successful fall season this afternoon, handing Niagara its first loss with a 5-2 win at Stoney Creek High School. It was the fourth win in five tries for the Golden Grizzlies, their best fall record since becoming a Division I program. Junior Angie Trecola (Troy, Mich.) picked up wins in both singles and doubles play, keeping her fall singles record perfect at 5-0. Oakland (4-1) got things rolling with the first point of the day in doubles action, sweeping all three matches to take the early lead. Michelle Maxfield (Commerce Township, Mich.) and Amanda Scheer (Sarnia, Ont.) led the way at No. 1 doubles with an 8-4 win over the Niagara (2-1) duo of Danielle Grenier and Julianne Prokopich. The Golden Grizzlies went on to take the doubles point on the strength of 8-5 wins in the other flights, with Teuta Lulgjuraj (Warren, Mich.) and Lisa Pellafone (Rochester, Mich.) getting a victory at No. 2 and the team of Trecola and Lauren Sanchez-Murphy (Rochester Hills, Mich.) picking up the win at No. 3. Oakland kept right on rolling with the wins in singles play, taking victories in flights 1-3. Lulgjuraj won in the top singles flight, winning the first set 6-2 before her opponent was forced to retire. Scheer and Maxfield also scored straight set wins at No. 2 and No. 3, securing enough points for the OU win. The win for Scheer came in her first appearance at the No. 2 flight this season. Trecola picked up the other Golden Grizzly victory, remaining undefeated with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Kim Roberts at No. 5. Oakland is now finished with the fall season and will return to action in the spring, with its first scheduled action coming on February 18 when the team will travel to IPFW.
