Box Score 1 Box Score 2 Rochester, Mich. (Apr. 30, 2004) ???C Oakland???s softball team has its chances here this afternoon against IUPUI in Mid-Con softball action, but the Golden Grizzlies could not come up with the big hit in game one and could not answer a four-run Jaguar uprising in the second game, dropping both contests by scores of 1-0 and 6-1.
Nicole Marzano (McHenry, Ill.) allowed only one unearned run in game one, striking out five with out a walk, but was still tagged with the loss. Oakland (9-36, 1-17 Mid-Con) had its best scoring chance in game one in the first inning.
Toni Salo (Ortonville, Mich.) led off with a single, but was cut down stealing.
Camie Knorr (Appleton, Wis.) then singled,
Erica Judge (Fort Collins, Colo.) was safe on an error and Marzano reached on a fielder???s choice to load the bases. IUPUI???s Angelica Espinosa got out of the jam, however, getting the next two OU hitters to pop up to end the threat. The Golden Grizzlies threatened again in the second when
Kate Jones (Crystal Lake, Ill.) and
Maria Benza (Loveland, Ohio) got base hits to start the inning, but Espinosa got the next three hitters to escape once again. IUPUI (17-25, 7-11 Mid-Con) scratched out what proved to be the winning run in the fourth. Sarah Needy led off with a single back to Marzano, who threw past first on the play, allowing Needy to take second. A wild pitch moved her to third, and with one out Devan Craig singled her home for the only run of the game. Oakland never really threatened after that as Espinosa allowed only a hit and a walk the rest of the way as she improved her record to 9-11, allowing six hits while striking out six. Marzano fell to 8-16 with the loss. Game two proved to be just as close as game one for the first five innings. The Jaguars struck first, getting two in the first. With one out and a runner on second Stacey Speshyock lined a hit to left that skipped past Marzano for a triple to plate the first run. Speshyock was thrown out at home on a fielder???s choice off the bat of Craig, but a double to left center by Blair Branson brought home Craig and it was 2-0. Oakland got one back in the bottom of the fourth to make it a one-run game. Judge led off with a single and stole second when the Jaguar defense could not corral a pick-off attempt at first.
Christina Schulte (Rochester, Mich.) singled her home with her second hit of the day to make it 2-1. IUPUI put the game away with a four-run outburst in the top of the sixth. A walk, fielder???s choice and single loaded the bases for the Jags with no outs. The next IUPUI hitter hit a sharp grounder that
Jessica Scholey (Mississauga, Ont.) at third was able to snag and nail the runner at the plate for the first out. But Amanda Bowman cleared the bases with a triple down the line in left and then scored on a sac fly from Susan Jones. Oakland got a pair of hits in the seventh with two outs, but could not push across any runs as the Jaguars got the sweep. Craig picked up the win for IUPUI, allowing eight hits and striking out seven, while Knorr took the loss, allowing six runs on 10 hits. Schulte, Jones and Knorr all had three hits during the afternoon???s action to lead the Oakland offense, which got 14 hits, but stranded a total of 11 runners. Craig and Needy also had three hits for IUPUI, with Bowman collecting three RBIs on her triple. The two teams will play another double-header tomorrow at Noon at the OU Softball Field.
